The article talked about the cancer of the larynx and its symptoms. The larynx is part of the respiratory tract between the pharynx and the trachea, containing the vocal chords. One of the main symptoms of having laryngeal cancer is hoarseness or rough or grating sound of the voice of an individual. This laryngeal cancer is known as glottic cancer. There are two additional types of glottic cancers; supraglottic, when located on top of the vocal cords and subglottic, when located underneath the vocal cords.

The article mentioned the various symptoms of supraglottic and subglottic cancers such as sore throat that stays or does not heal, feeling of pain when swallowing the foods or there is difficulty in ingesting the foods, alteration or hoarseness of the voice, a feeling of soreness in the ear, and swelling or palpable mass in the neck. The cancers located in supraglottis or subglottis has the propensity to proliferate rapidly than glottic cancer since the supraglottis and subglottis have added lymph vessels wherein the cancer cells passed through to propagate.

In case the medical doctor diagnosed the patient to have signs or symptoms of laryngeal cancer, the doctor shall perform laryngoscopy to confirm his or her findings. Laryngoscopy is the process wherein the medical doctor shall insert through the mouth of the patient down to his or her throat, a tube with special light on the end of it to take a glimpse of the larynx in order to determine its status and its corresponding appearance. Such instrument is known as a laryngoscope. In case the larynx has tissue, which seems not normal or typical, the medical doctor shall perform biopsy through slicing a minute portion of the tissue and examine it under the microscope to ascertain the presence of cancer cells in it. This is one of the most important methods in identifying the kind and degree of the disease that infects the patient. It is also important that the medical doctor examine the patient if he or she has throat lumps.

The prognosis or the possibility of recuperating from laryngeal cancer is dependent upon some factors such as the location of the cancer in the larynx, its expansion, and the overall health of the patient inflicted with such illness. If the cancer has already metastasized or proliferated to different body tissues, or has reached a higher stage based on the examinations performed, the chances of survival of the patient is very limited.

Thus, it is generally being advised to consult the medical doctor or the physician if the patient has felt some changes or pain in his or her throat as early as possible and not wait for the sickness to stay for a long time without treating it. The patient is also warned not to self-medicate because one might not be treating the exact disease and may only create imbalance or more problems in his or her body. Sometimes this might also result to resistance of diseased-causing germs to certain drugs, which can result to non treatment of disease and worse would lead to deeper complications.
