The article talked about the cancer of the larynx and its symptoms. The larynx is part of the respiratory tract between the pharynx and the trachea, containing the vocal chords. One of the main symptoms of having laryngeal cancer is hoarseness or rough or grating sound of the voice of an individual. This laryngeal cancer is known as glottic cancer. There are two additional types of glottic cancers; supraglottic, when located on top of the vocal cords and subglottic, when located underneath the vocal cords.

The article mentioned the various symptoms of supraglottic and subglottic cancers such as sore throat that stays or does not heal, feeling of pain when swallowing the foods or there is difficulty in ingesting the foods, alteration or hoarseness of the voice, a feeling of soreness in the ear, and swelling or palpable mass in the neck. The cancers located in supraglottis or subglottis has the propensity to proliferate rapidly than glottic cancer since the supraglottis and subglottis have added lymph vessels wherein the cancer cells passed through to propagate.

The article contained discussions about the disease called bronchitis. The term is defined as an inflammation or soreness of the mucous membrane of the bronchial tubes or bronchi commonly triggered by infection but can also be caused by irritation from a gas or an irritant. The Bronchi are the two main branches of the trachea leading directly to the lungs. The article mentioned the symptoms, types, and causes as well as the medications of the disease.

It is stated that a bronchitis, which could last up to ninety days or three months is known as acute bronchitis. If the signs last longer than the acute bronchitis such that it continues for months or years then it is categorized as chronic bronchitis. Such chronicity of the disease may even lead to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD when it tends to reduce or diminish the airflow.

Malignant carcinoid may produce hormones like seratonin. CARCINOID TUMORS spread by direct invasion of underlying layers of tissue. In the early stages, carcinoid tumors are treatable and often curable. They can also spread via lymphatics to regional lymph nodes and through the bloodstream to the liver, lungs, bone or other organs. The risk of metastasis is related to the size of the primary tumor. CARCINOIDS are open classified as neuroendocrine. People with carcinoid tumors in their appendix often don’t have symptoms. Rectal carcinoids are often found on routine exam, though they can cause pain and bleeding from the rectum. (more…)

Gastrointestinal bleeding can occur at any age from birth on. reflection of Gastrointestinal bleeding can range from microscopic bleeding, only the amount of blood is so tiny that it can only be detected by gastrointestinal scopes to massive bleeding. Various causes of bleeding are related to conditions that can be heal or controlled, such as hemorrhoids. The cause of bleeding may not be sedate, but locating the originator of bleeding is important. Common Causes of gastrointestinal bleeding include Hemorrhoids, Duodenal ulcer, Gastric ulcer, Bleeding diverticulum, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, esophageal varices, Arterio-venous malformations, nosebleed, Mallory-Weiss tear, Esophagitis, Dysentery, Ischemic bowel, Colon cancer. (more…)

ENDOSCOPE is a long slender medical instrument used for exploratory, diagnostic and surgical purposes, used for examining interior of a body cavity COLONOSCOPY is an endoscopic medical procedure that uses a long, flexible, lighted tubular instrument called a colonoscope. Colonscope is a type of gastrointestinal scope to examine and view the interior of the large intestine to check for abnormalities of the inner lining such as colitis, colon polyps, and cancer. A COLONOSCOPY is generally recommended when the patient complains of rectal bleeding, has a change in bowel habits, and/or has other unexplained abdominal symptoms. The test is frequently used to look for colorectal cancer, especially when polyps or tumor-like growths have been detected by a barium enema examination and other diagnostic imaging tests. Colonoscopy can be performed either in a physician’s office or in an endoscopic procedure room of a hospital, it is often performed in the endoscopy department of a hospital, where more intensive physiologic monitoring and/or general anesthesia can be better provided. COLONOSCOPY is used for Colon cancer, Polyps, Colitis, Diverticulosis and diverticulitis, Bleeding lesions, Abdominal symptoms, such as pain or discomfort, particularly if associated with weight loss or anemia, Abnormal barium x-ray exam, Chronic diarrhea, constipation, or a change in bowel habits, Anemia. (more…)

In addition to lectures on neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, the course includes over 10 hours of microscopy examine by a gastrointestinal scopes based on a unique collection of hundreds of endoscopic biopsies. GASTROENTEROLOGY Conscious of the importance of this subject, we offer a gastroenterology program, which includes the process of the pathologies of the digestive tract and the liver, as well as the common means of diagnosis such as video-endoscopy procedures. GASTROINTESTINAL DIAGNOSTIC CAPABILITIES Specialized endoscopic procedures - including colonoscopy, gastroscopy, sigmiodoscopy, duodenoscopy and such as slight bowel enteroscopy - give hospital physicians the ability to accurately diagnose patient abnormalities, without the added risk of exploratory surgery. These intricate scopes are used for certain surgical procedures, too. Our gastrointestinal program also offers some of the latest diagnostic procedures not offered at most hospitals including small bowel capsule endoscopy, in which a pill-like device with a small camera is used to photograph the small intestine. This innovative procedure helps diagnose previously undetectable abnormalities that can cause gastrointestinal bleeding. Saint Joseph also uses endoscopic ultrasonography, a state-of-the-art procedure for the diagnosis and treatment of digestive system cancer or tumors and disorders of the pancreas, gall bladder, esophogus, stomach and colon or rectum. Specialized tests also are performed to discover causes of chest pain unrelated to the heart and swallowing difficulties. (more…)
